As you may have seen on the BBC, Antonelli were proud to be able to demonstrate to the British public how cones and their
manufacture have developed over the last 100 years.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Great British Bake Off, it is a prime time popular show broadcast by the BBC. In their words “The Great British Bake Off is the ultimate baking battle where passionate amateur baking fans compete to be crowned the UK’s Best Amateur Baker.”
Cones – the “Unsung Hero of the Seaside”
The producers of Great British Bake Off approached Antonelli to provide an insight into the ice cream industry for their episode focusing on biscuits. From biscuits to ice cream cones or in the words of Sue Perkins (the bake off presenter) ‘the unsung hero of the seaside’. The history of ice cream and gelato and how it was previously sold on the streets of Manchester in a glass ‘penny lick’, served as an introduction to the development of cones. During the short feature in the Antonelli bakery, Sue experienced making a cone by hand in the old fashioned way. She then tasted the cone, which she described, as ‘delicious’, to David Antonelli, questioning whether you even needed the ice cream! Off screen she then had a tour of the Antonelli bakery and saw how the manufacture of cones has progressed, with Antonelli now making over a million cones a week in a variety of shapes and sizes, from the renowned Antonelli Smoothy® waffle cones, to Sugaco® sugar cones as
well as the light eat wafer cones.
Ambassadors for the Industry
As the leading manufacturer of the widest selection of ice cream cones in the UK and probably in Europe, Antonelli were pleased to be ambassadors for the ice cream industry. “It was exciting to be included on such a popular show” explained David Antonelli, who co-presented the cone manufacturing feature, “Sue seemed genuinely interested in our cones and how they were made and spent a long time looking around our production facility.”
